Recreation Information
Wilderness Shores - Developed by Wisconsin Electric Power Company, there are 15 wilderness recreation areas located on nearby Michigamme Reservoir and Peavy Falls Pond. Both flowages combined provide hundreds of miles of undeveloped shoreline and islands where your family can pause and explore a variety of memorable outdoor experiences. Campsites, while primitive, usually provide vault type toilets, boat launching ramps, refuse containers and fire pits. The Mountain Lake facility, located on the Michigamme Reservoir, is a group campsite and reservations are a must. For additional information, contact Wisconsin Electric at 906-779-2481.
Horse Race Rapids - It’s located approximate 7.5 miles southeast of town. A gravel road will take you to the trail that leads down to the rapids of the Paint River. Follow the sound of the rushing water as you walk along the rugged but well-worn foot path. Soon you’ll come to large boulders that line the shores of beautiful Horse Race Rapids. You’ll be in awe at the sight of the powerful rapids and the beauty of the tree-lined shore. Untouched by time and man, this picturesque setting will take your breath away. Try your hand at fishing for perch and rock bass from the tops of the large boulders. The less adventurous can easily fish along the shore without doing any climbing. You’ll observe nature at it’s finest, and you’ll surely gain a new appreciation for our environment while fishing along the shore of one of the Upper Peninsula’s best kept secrets.
